There is no need to worry about the new independent driving test as it's not as hard as some of the stories you may be hearing!
You will need to demonstrate that you can drive independently for approximately 10 minutes of the test. You will be shown a basic map of junctions and roundabouts or you will be asked to follow signs - it's not difficult as long as you are truly ready for your test, so don't rush it and wait until you're driving instructor tells you that you are ready.
I will give you a few pointers about the test that I feel will help, I am constantly telling my own pupils the following things and I believe this really does help them. However if you could ask them I'm sure they would just say I nag them I don't mind nagging them as driving is as skill for life not just about passing your test.
You are not being tested on your ability to follow instructions, if you forget where you are going just ask the examiner - they are human. You are being tested on your ability to drive safely - if you make a mistake correct yourself SAFELY and you will be fine.Let me give you an example of a real life situation: (Not one of my pupils)
A young lady was on her independent drive part of her test, she was asked to go ahead at the first roundabout, left at the second roundabout and take the first turning on the right.
Well she did the roundabouts fine but did not see the right turning until she was on top of it, so she panicked and slammed on the brakes - guess what she failed with a serious.
If this young lady had gone past the right turning and just waited for her next instruction from the examiner or even said "oh sorry I just went pasted it" she would have passed!
So the lesson here is not to panic, if things go wrong just carry on and don't worry about what you did, just worry about what is ahead!
To follow a sign is not hard as long as you don't panic. Take your time with your driving and have good observations. The earlier you notice a sign the earlier you can plan your approach and your correct lane. As stated earlier if you take the wrong lane, wrong position just go the way you intended! The examiner will not fail you on going the wrong way!!!
Hope this is helpful for those of you learning to drive at the moment.
