The fuel economy threshold has been set: cars getting 40 miles to the gallon the highway are in demand, especially as gas prices continue to march ever higher.
Right now, there are several models getting 40 mpg highway including the Ford Fiesta, Ford Focus, Smart ForTwo, Chevrolet Cruze and the Hyundai Elantra. Only the Hyundai and Smart models offer across the board range topping fuel economy; the Fords and the Chevrolet offer it with select special editions.
As 2011 progresses, several more models will be introduced, each of which will hit the coveted 40 mpg threshold. Let's take a look at what will be coming down the pike in the coming months:
1. Honda Civic HF -- An all new Civic model is being prepared for spring 2011 release and this one will be a fuel mileage champion. Reportedly, Honda's "high fuel" edition will get 41 mpg, matching the Smart and besting most of the competition including its arch-rival, the Toyota Corolla.
2. Hyundai Accent -- They did it with compact Elantra and now Hyundai wants to bring 40 mpg love to its subcompact Accent. They'll do it with a car that is smaller and lighter than the Elantra this spring, although Hyundai hasn't said whether it will top the 29 mpg city, 40 mpg highway offered with the Elantra.
3. Hyundai Veloster -- A new Hyundai three-door coupe is on its way, underpinned by the same platform powering the Elantra. This two plus two coupe is uniquely styled, but it will share the same gas sipping technology found in the compact Hyundai. Arrival is set for summer 2011.
4. Kia Rio -- Like the Hyundai Accent, the Kia Rio is all new and arriving this fall. These two models share the same platform and under the hood technology, but different bodies. You'll get a fuel mileage preview of what the Rio can do in the Accent months before its debut.
5. Mazda 3 -- Underpinned by the same platform powering the Ford Focus, the Mazda 3 is its own beast and will have its own engine and transmissions to help this car achieve 40 mpg when it arrives in the fall. Like the Focus, a special edition model may be what helps the "3" get its lofty highway mileage.
Most models offering 40 mpg highway are limited which means only select editions achieve the magic number. Expect that to change as consumers demand the best fuel mileage possible as one way to ease their pain at the gas station pump. Best of all, each qualifying model costs under $20,000, a price most car buyers can live with.
